The Kaiserstuhl, or "Emperor's Seat," refers to a small mountain range in central Baden known for its extensive terraced vineyards. The name comes from the 13th century and honors Emperor Otto III when he visited the region in 994. This hike goes through some of the best highlights of the Kaiserstuhl and could be done in several parts if it's too long.
Often overlooked are hikes along river edges, as they lack the dramatic landscapes and castles that you get from climbing over highland terrain. This hike is all about the ancient forests that once stretched along the Rhine. This hike goes overland through the beautiful terrain of the Markgräferland to a stand of ancient trees on the Rhine.
The Ölberg is a mountain of vineyard terraces overlooking the spectacular landscape of the Markgräferland. In particular, the castle ruins of Staufen dominate the landscape. This hike takes you up above the city of Freiburg and then down the mountains and over the Ölberg, ending with a descent through the vineyards.
The Hochblauen mountain is the "Hausberg," or the symbolic heights of the Markgräflerland region. From here, you get sweeping vistas of the surrounding landscape, a mixture of dense forestland, pastoral landscapes, and agricultural terraces. It's a long way up, but the views are worth it.
