The Red Moor is an ancient wetland in the highlands of the Rhön. Though much of it was drained or harvested for peat, today, it is a nice glimpse of the primeval landscapes of Europe. Including ancient deep ponds or "eyes of the moor," which served as cult sites for worship through to the end of the middle ages.
The Vogelsberg is a region in Upper Hessen known for its rolling and forested landscape. Much like the Odenwald and Westerwald, it's a mixture of small villages, forests, and agricultural land. This hike takes you up through this landscape to a highland moor, an ancient wetland with a unique natural landscape.
Hike among the sandstone spires of the Palatine Forest and uncover two ancient castle ruins and spectacular viewpoints. At one point, you will come across a preserved section of a Gallo-Roman road that once traversed the mountain pass. This hike may be somewhat challenging, but it is worth the effort.
This hike takes you from the more famous castle of Trifels in the opposite direction. You will head north to see the remnants of the imperial monastery of Eußerthal and the dramatic sandstone cliffs of the Palatine Forest.
This hike takes you through the small towns and villages at the base of the Wasgau Mountains, where the Rhine valley ends. Its a region known for its castles and vineyards, which are in ample supply on this trip.
