The town of Gersfeld is the only real convenient gateway to the Rhön as it has one of the region's few train stations. There are several interesting destinations near Gersfeld, including the Red Moor and the Source of the Fulda River. However, these don't appear on this hike as we are focused on traveling down the charmingly pastoral Fulda valley as it slowly becomes a river. Along the way, there are vistas of the rolling Rhön highlands and the ruins of the ancient Ebersberg Castle.
