Hike: Castles of the Ahr Valley

One of the highlights of the Ahr Valley is the dramatic ruins of the Saffenburg, a large fortress, and residence of the Saffenburg County. The fortress resisted countless sieges from the Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century, when it was systematically blown up. This hike takes you through the steep gorge of the Ahr as it navigates around the cliff that the Saffenburg rests on.

Hike: Drachenfels and the Siebenbergen

The Drachenfels is the northern gate to the Middle Rhine Valley. Sitting high above the Rhine are two dramatic castles. The 19th-century Drachenfels palace and the ruins of the once mighty Drachenfels castle. Both are open to the public, and this hike is all about hiking to and around them while getting the best views of the Rhine Valley.

Hike: Medieval Landscapes of Blankenberg

This is less of a hike and more of a guided tour. Blankenberg is a remarkable Sieg Valley village with a beautifully preserved old town and castle ruins. The traces of the medieval village, which today is an empty field, makes it even more interesting. The surrounding valley is all beautiful, make sure to check out the local dairy farm and monastery.
