Hiking: Along the Iron Curtain

Germany has preserved several portions of the old Iron Curtain, which separated the country during the Cold War. For much of the old border, you can walk along the old roads which supported the border guards. Point Alpha is a fully preserved border station with exhibitions on weapons and life for the opposing authorities. Nearby are a series of surviving towers and border infrastructure. This hike takes you along the best-preserved portion of the old East-West German Border.

How to Get Here:

  • This hike is best reached by car, where you can park in the town of Geisa, where the hike starts.
  • There is a bus from the nearby town of Hünfeld, but if you are arriving by bus, the hike should start already at Point Alpha.
