One of the highlights of the Ahr Valley is the dramatic ruins of the Saffenburg, a large fortress, and residence of the Saffenburg County. The fortress resisted countless sieges from the Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century, when it was systematically blown up. This hike takes you through the steep gorge of the Ahr as it navigates around the cliff that the Saffenburg rests on.
How to Get Here:
- The hike starts in Mayschoss, and there is no set end. I think ending in Kreuzberg or Altenburg is nice, but if you want to climb up to the Saffenburg, I added that to the hike.
